As you may well be aware, there have been many people building networks and communities for advice, coordinating and networking for like minded people on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more recently Telegram!
Now for someone who is an experienced software engineer, social networking platforms have many issues, but you don't need to be technically minded to understand some of the many issues currently faced with using the likes of Facebook and Twitter to build communities. Due to the centralised nature of the platforms and the owners knowing which side their bread's buttered, they are compelled by government and other large corporations to censor users who form any opinion that is not inline with their narrative.
There are many communities and influencers who have built large audiences and communities, often in the tens and hundreds of thousands of members, only to have Everything Deleted at the click of a button, nearly always for thought crimes or as they love to say, "spreading misinformation"; but not to worry, they have their independent "Fact checkers" to make sure that what is said is factual. I do wonder how I ever managed to get by in life, without those wonderful "Fact Checkers", I am sure I never would have been able to determine what a fact was on my own ;-).
We are currently working on building our own Twitter style micro-blogging platform, however, for the time being we see the best solution is XMPP!
Good question, Telegram can be brilliant, but don't forget, it is still owned by a private company, and if they get pressured to they will start to censor and deplatform their members if they are compelled to do so. There has also been a lot of buzz around them being bought by larger companies like Google, so the moment that happens, freedom of sppech will not be respected for long.
Open Source - XMPP has had its code available for the world to see, review and audit which means it is EXTREMELY SAFE, and has been around since 1999, a lifetime in computer terms! Visit XMPP.org for more in-depth information!.
Encrypted - Without boring you with the technical details, XMPP is as secure as you can get when it comes to encryption and security. The option we provide is OMEMO.
FEDERATED - You are not restricted to Telegram, Twitter or any private company, you can choose whichever service provider you like, as you would with an email server. We provide an XMPP server, but you can choose a different one and still communicate with people on pour server. This gives complete freedom of choice when it comes to selecting a XMPP provider.
Cross Platform - Many apps are restriced to certain platforms, XMPP offers great apps for ALL DEVICES including macOS, iPhone, Android, Windows, Linux, BSD and as far as I know even Blackberry! We will add our recomendations below!
Trustworthy - Like with most of the closed platforms available to people, you have no idea that your privacy or security are being handled properly. With XMPP you can use a public service like the Conversations Compliance Checker, where you can audit the level of security that different XMPP providers are offering!
iPhone, iPad and macOS - For Apple I would recommend ChatSecure again free and open source and very well designed!
Windows and Linux - Pidgin Would be the desktop XMPP client I would recommend.
For other lists of clients feel free to visit XMPP Clients
We will be adding guides to using XMPP Windows soon, but these guides should be enough for you to connect the dots! :-)
When you have downloaded an XMPP Client, the process is more less the same to join an XMPP server, you can still Join our Rooms. But to use our XMPP Server just do the following:
Please be respectful, we do not block accounts unless without solid reason, however, applying common sense we will not tolerate abuse.
This is a work in progress, at present there are still a few features lacking. In the next few days we will be upgrading our server to enable voice chat and image uploads etc.
We are completely self funded, it is more important to get build community and teamwork which is why we are providing the accounts free of charge. However, if you do see the benefit to what we are doing and you are in the position to contribute financially, your donations will be massively appreciated. You can find out how to make an anonymous donation in the 'HELP SUPPORT US!' Button in the main menu.
Please share and encourage your friends and family to join, the more people we get onboard the better. Encouraging people to use services like XMPP rather than spyware like WhatsApp and Telegram is a great form of activism in its own right :-)
The public rooms at the moment are open, if you wish to talk to people with full encryption, you will need to add them and talk privately. When doing this your chat is completely secure with end to end encryption. This should be indicated with the padlock sign.
If you have any questions it is best to ask in the main chats.
We will be adding more rooms as time goes on so please bear with us and if you would like other groups to be created, please bring this up in the main chat or by messaging firstname.lastname@example.org.
